Alcoholics and Social Drinkers

Letter in Medical Tribune

After reviewing the recently published "white paper" on alcohol problems, A Report to the Nation [1] by the Cooperative Commission on the Study of Alcoholism, I was left with many disquieting doubts. This five-year study and report financed by a $1,100,000 Federal grant recommends, among other things, a change in our cultural drinking patterns along the lines of increased emphasis on social and family drinking as contrasted to solitary and "men only" drinking. An excellent paper by Hayman on "The Myth of Social Drinking" (American Journal of Psychiatry, November 1967) helped to crystallize my doubts.
