Suicides Linked to Drug Use

Overuse of drugs or alcohol was described as an important factor in about 40 percent of physician suicides in a study conducted by an Oregon psychiatrist.

Paul H. Blachly, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Oregon Medical School, based this conclusion on investigation of 200 physician suicides listed over a two-year period in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
