28th International Congress on Alcohol and Alcoholism

WASHINGTON, D.C.: Many of the world's leading scientific experts on alcoholism and allied problems met in Washington from September 15 through 20, to explore the opportunities and means of stimulating effective solutions to the problem of alcoholism. The occasion was the 28th International Congress on Alcohol and Alcoholism.

Meeting together were representatives from forty countries (including the U.S.S.R., Thailand, Poland, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Japan, Rumania, and Czechoslovakia): leading psychiatrists and other physicians, biochemists, jurists, educators, industrialists, labor officials, temperance advocates, welfare administrators, anthropologists, pharmacologists, statisticians, clergymen, economists, counselors, sociologists, psychologists, leaders of the beverage-alcohol industry, nurses, government executives, police officials, magistrates, public-health officers, and others. All of them are trying desperately not only to help alcoholics but also to explore other subjects in connection with ethyl alcohol, such as: traffic safety, social and cultural pressures, education and teenage drinking, law and drunkenness, biochemical research, documentation, regulation of alcohol distribution, etc.
