'Integration' - Alcohol and Drugs

The problems associated with alcohol are of "far greater magnitude" than those stemming from drugs, according to Thomas F. A. Plaut, Ph.D., assistant chief of the NIMH National Center for Prevention and Control of Alcoholism in Maryland.

"If the criteria being used are damage to health, impairment of social functioning, or reduced job effectiveness," he said, "undoubtedly alcohol-associated difficulties exceed those of all other substances combined." Nevertheless, he pointed out, the public is much more concerned about drug problems than about the problems of alcohol.
