How does a large corporation handle the problem of the alcoholic employee?

Dr. John J. Welsh, medical director of Union Carbide Corp., says, "Traditionally, supervisors in business and industry have offered the alcoholic sympathetic protection which carries many of them through early phases of their problem drinking to a rather obvious late phase which cannot be tolerated. The employee then often must be discharged because of chronic alcoholism."
