Soviet Solution: a Press Barrage

MOSCOW--Drinking, to many people here, is a way of life, and according to officials, the chief cause of crime and public disorder.

But, despite a constant campaign, alcoholism seems to be on the rise, and a new drive was launched in the press this week.

Prof. Yuri Tkachevsky, writing in Pravda today, said that alcoholism was the cause of 40 percent of all Moscow divorces, that 63 percent of all those who drowned in Moscow rivers and lakes were drunk, and that drunks were responsible for 98 percent of murders and more than 83 percent of those who died in...
