Family Approach to "the Family Disease

Only one member of a family may have a drinking problem, but every member of the family suffers the "hangover." To help families so afflicted, the Alcoholism Treatment Center at Monmouth Medical Center has instituted a new program. It is described as Conjoint Family Group Treatment, for alcoholics, problem drinkers, and their families.

The group-therapy program is the product of medical-psychiatric teamwork. Dr. Norman Nathanson, who supervises the medical aspects, and Dr. Bernard Swerdlow, the psychiatric chairman, agree that the group approach offers more thorough and lasting relief for what is often a severe and long-term problem.
