Teenage Alcoholics

"Drinking represents second-class status among kids. It's been replaced by pot," said Florida Juvenile Judge Rufus Jefferson. But Florida's Mental Health Division says nearly every teenager tries liquor, and one of 15 becomes an alcoholic. Teenage drug addiction makes more headlines, but a 15-year-old Miami girl recently committed suicide with a pistol in a drunken stupor.

Florida's Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center, near Avon Park, has been pressured by judges, ministers, and schools to accept teenagers into the program. The center has a waiting list of teenagers, but no money budgeted for such a program. But it is gearing for experimental work with youth.
