Gap in Medical Education

"It's rare that the medical student even sees an alcoholic patient," said Dr. Jack Mendelson, psychiatrist and chief of the National Center for Prevention and Control of Alcoholism at the National Institute of Mental Health.

"The medical student gets bits and pieces of topical areas that might relate to alcoholism, such as the pharmacological effects of alcohol on the central nervous system, but he's rarely presented with a coherent lecture in which all phases of alcohol-related disorders are discussed," Dr. Mendelson said.
