Q.: What actually is the history of the toast?

A.: Years ago, people would put a piece of bread "parched with heat"--the literal meaning of the word "toast"--into a tankard of beer or a glass of wine. By so doing, they believed they improved the flavor.

The toast additive, however, was eventually found to be of no real value and was left out of the drink. Drinking the health of a person is still called a toast, however, reminiscent of the long since vanished piece of parched bread.
