Drunken Flyers Grounded

DALLAS, Tex.--Tipsy birds go to the Dallas Zoo to dry out, Larry Calvin, zoo director, says the birds get high on fermented berries when they drop down for a snack while winging through Texas on migration routes. Some get so high they can't even get off the ground.

One Dallas birdwatcher reported she'd seen a mockingbird trying to walk a rail like a chalk line. Another claimed to have seen robins in a drunken orgy. But the bird most under the influence is said to be the cedar waxwing, which gets its slug of alcohol from pyracantha berries.
