Smog Drives Rats to Drink

Why do humans crave alcohol? Dr. Robert S. Pogrund, an associate professor at the UCLA School of Public Health, has come up with a new culprit, smog.

Dr. Pogrund, investigating smog and the changes it causes in human behavior, recently exposed 10 rats to air with the smog content of a rush-hour freeway (roughly 200 parts per million of carbon monoxide).
