Alcoholism in the Services
A retired Army master sergeant, testifying before a Senate subcommittee, said he was in charge of atomic warheads during periods when he was consistently drunk.
The subcommittee on alcoholism and drugs also heard a Navy captain say that he commanded a ship while drank, and a retired Air Force colonel admit that he flew jets while he was [sic] an alcoholic.
The sergeant said that, during one of his frequent absences, the control mechanisms on the atomic warheads were changed without his knowledge.
