About Alcoholism - Alcoholism Information, Research and Treatment

Book Review - 'World Dialogue on Alcohol and Drug Dependence'

No review could do justice to this book, which grew out of the 28th International Congress on Alcohol and Drug Addictions. It has many of the qualities of good detective or science fiction--mystery, suspense, tragedy--but it is a skillfully organized presentation of facts, and Elizabeth D. Whitney deserves high praise for her job of arranging and editing. (A recognized authority in the alcoholism field, she also wrote one of the chapters, "Voluntary Agencies, Past, Present and Future.")

Well-written by experts, the book focuses on the current state of alcoholism therapy and research throughout the world. Part One. "The World Meets the Challenge of Alcoholism," is not only illuminating, but bursting with surprises--things I never knew till now, such as: "The first scientific congress on alcoholism was held in Paris in 1878." (Nothing came of it.) And "In 1920, the League of Nations proposed to recognize alcoholism as a world health problem." (It failed.)
