About Alcoholism - Alcoholism Information, Research and Treatment

Animal Kingdom

Researcher Russell V. Brown, who has his doctorate from Iowa State University, is studying the alcohol consumption and behavior of [16 "miniature"] pigs because of the physical qualities they share with humans--similar circulatory systems, skin, weights of various organs such as the kidney and liver, reaction to drugs.

So far, Brown has found that: Pigs get drunk, have hangovers and withdrawal symptoms when deprived of alcohol; they suffer liver damage from their drinking; male pigs have a larger alcohol intake at the start, but the females soon catch up; pigs will toss down anything placed in front of them--beer, screwdrivers, bloody Marys, Coke, and vodka. Females, it seems, are especially fond of beer.
