Dr. Francis Curry, [San Francisco] city health director, pointed out the irony of the contrast between a businessman "social drinker" and a skid-row "bum"--though each is actually an alcoholic.

"The successful businessman quits his job at 4:30, drops a tranquilizer in his mouth, goes to the local bar, has a couple of drinks to settle himself, goes home, has a drink before dinner and a drink after dinner, takes a barbiturate to go to sleep, gets up in the morning, has a cup of coffee, which he takes with a pill to get him started, and repeats the routine, day after day."
