White House Alcoholic?

Q: Have any U.S. Presidents been alcoholics apart from Ulysses S. Grant?

A: Grant did like his whiskey, but it is doubtful that he could be classified an alcoholic. Historians, however, do so classify President Franklin Pierce, one of our forgotten Chief Executives, who died of cirrhosis of the liver. Pierce's first child died in infancy; the second one at age four; and his son of 11 was crushed to death by a train before his very eyes. This may explain something about the drowning of his sorrows.
