In January of this year, the hospital [Columbus Hospital, New York City] expanded its services for alcoholics. The detoxification unit was doubled in size. Comprehensive service allows for initial inpatient acute care, with medical and psychiatric followup. In addition, patients are in close touch with Alcoholics Anonymous during their hospital stay, and an attempt is made to establish a strong link with the referring agency for when the patient is discharged. This continuing care for the alcoholic, so that he or she is not thrown back into society without supportive care after a brief drying-out period, is most essential.
