About Alcoholism - Alcoholism Information, Research and Treatment

Insurance-Company View

An alcoholic who can demonstrate that through Alcoholics Anonymous and/or with psychiatric help he has kicked the habit, stands a good chance of obtaining insurance coverage, according to Maurice Blond, a Travelers general agent in New York City, quoted in Scope Publications' Alcoholism and Alcohol Education.

In attempting to arrange insurance coverage for persons with alcohol problems, Mr. Blond said he takes the contemporary view that alcoholism is a disease. This approach brings into play the assistance of physicians and other professionals in analyzing, for insurance negotiations, the degree to which the applicant is suffering from alcoholism. It also reveals the physical change he may have suffered, and the steps he has taken to arrest the progress of the disease and to control his drinking habit.
