BERKELEY, CALIF.--Children who will become problem drinkers in later life can be identified by their personality trails in junior high school, a University of California researcher said.

Mrs. Mary Cover Jones, a research associate at the Institute of Human Development at Berkeley, said the traits centered on unstable, unpredictable, impulsive behavior.

Boys who become problem drinkers show too much emphasis on masculinity, possibly reflecting their concern about the male role, she said. Women who drink too much--and there are fewer of them--tend to be depressed,...
