Liquor Ads Attacked

The Consumers Union, after a five-year study of drugs, has recommended. . .a nationwide ban on cigarette and alcohol advertising. The union presented these and other recommendations--and a wide array of supporting data--in a book, Licit and Illicit Drugs, by Edward M. Brecher and the editors of Consumer Reports, the union's monthly magazine.

Contending that the nation's alcohol problem is "a far larger problem, no matter how measured, than all other drug problems added together," the authors said that "the ideal solution is to raise a generation of young people whose needs" for alcohol and pharmacologically similar barbiturates are "minimal."
