Trusting my GPS

Far from home and needing a meeting, a sober teacher took action and let her Higher Power lead the way

At 16 years sober, another boyfriend du jour had broken up with me. I hated my work and had no concept of God. I wanted to drink. I had not learned that the Steps would guide me to a God of my understanding. I thought, Hey, I got sober in Europe. Why not try a different continent to find God? Maybe China has what I need.

So in June of 2007, I decided to go to Asia. Under the guise of teaching English to adolescent Chinese students, this “geographic” took me to Beijing to teach for the summer. Little did I know that within the first 36 hours, halfway around the world, my GPS, or “God Positioning System” would direct me to the language of the heart.
