Alexander, MD, of the cardiovascular section of the VA Hospital in Minneapolis, studied 28 cases of this syndrome [cobalt-beer cardiomyopathy, in Quebec City] from 1964 to 1967, finding a mortality rate of 18% for the acute illness, but a total mortality of 43% when late deaths are considered.
