About Alcoholism - Alcoholism Information, Research and Treatment

British Hospital Survey

LONDON, ENGLAND--The shocking lack of hospital facilities for the estimated 356,000 alcoholics in England and Wales has been revealed in a report published by the Helping Hand Organization, which operates rehabilitation units for alcoholics.

There are only 381 hospital beds--or one bed per 934 alcoholics! Nearly half of the beds--183--are in the London area, leaving only 198 for other areas. Yet even in London, those seeking urgent treatment must often be placed on a waiting list. The need is so great, says the report, that even the planned building of eight new regional units, with a total of 116 beds amongst them, will amount to only a gesture.
