PEORIA, ILL.--Hard drinking is a way of life for many of Peoria's 127,000 hardworking citizens. The Illinois Department of Mental Health estimates 10,000 of them are alcoholics.

The Caterpillar Tractor Corporation, which employs 28,000 Peoria-area residents, is working closely with United Auto Workers Local 974 to identify and treat a growing number of alcoholics and drug-users, at considerable expense to the company.
