WESTPORT, CONN.--The alcoholic woman is a problem that is peculiar to no particular type of living. But in the affluent suburbs, there are some subtle differences. Money helps mask the problem and delay effective treatment.

"In a community like ours, it's easier to cover up," said Marie Fitzsimmons, director of the Alcoholism Guidance Center in Westport. "There's money for liquor, for psychiatry, for a housekeeper, all of which may work against coming to grips with the reality of alcoholism."
