Age Level Going Down?

Twelve-year-olds are becoming weekend drunks in the Buffalo area. Where drinking too much used to be almost exclusively an adult problem, now it is spreading downward in age to sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade pupils, "which means we are finding it in as young as 12," according to Joseph C. Donofrio, who directs Catholic Charities' drug-abuse education program in the Buffalo Diocesan schools.

"The boys and girls who are drinking a lot," he said, "are doing it for the most part at weekend parties in each other's homes, on Saturday and Sunday nights when their parents are out, or when groups of friends get together at homes where there will be no parental supervision."
