About Alcoholism - Alcoholism Information, Research and Treatment

No Carrot, No Stick

The key to treating ghetto alcoholics is understanding that they don't aspire to sobriety, according to a New York psychiatrist. Caught in a morass of poverty and squalor, they find in alcohol a natural escape from the conditions in which they live, and attempts to moralize about the virtues of sobriety will succeed only in losing them as patients, [said] Dr. Harvey Bluestone, director of the Department of Psychiatry at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center.

"Becoming a sober, productive, useful member of society has no priority at all with our patients," said Dr. Bluestone, whose alcoholic center is treating some 170 alcoholics from a ghetto area of the Bronx.
