The manic phase of the milder forms of manic-depression may be a positive energizer that drives some of the most creative and productive overachievers in current society, [said] Dr. Ronald R. Fieve, of the New York State Psychiatric Institute.

Dr. Fieve said that the manic side of milder forms of manic-depression is "rewarded by the American culture, where men are catapulted to early success by working 18 hours a day, and you would probably find it a factor if you set out to examine 'the 10 most dynamic men in America and what makes them tick.' "
