Under her nose

I got sober when I was 24, and I often state that you don’t stop drinking when you’re 24 unless it was really bad.

So when I found my way into AA I was all in: home group, service, sponsor, Steps, meditation. And I thrived. I started growing up in AA. After I graduated from school, I decided I was sober enough to relocate. I was born and raised in Philadelphia, which had a population of about five million at that time.

With my best five-years-sober thinking, I started planning a move to upstate New York—with my 7-year-old daughter—to a small town with a population of 13,000. By this time, I had received many glorious gifts in sobriety. But I still had an ego that was 10 feet tall and bulletproof. Against my sponsor’s advice, I moved.
