Support for Social Workers

Following the example set by the United States, many countries subordinate the role of the social worker in the fight against alcohol and drug addiction, according to a South African welfare worker. This might prove to be unwise. Dr. Arnold Wickler indicated. Dr. Wickler is a deputy secretary in the South African Department of Social Welfare and Pensions.

The United States and other countries, for simplicity's sake, classify alcoholism as a "sickness," he said. As a consequence, many of the newly developed programs come under the supervision of doctors and psychiatrists.
