Loving William

I’ve been sober for 24 years and my home group is the St. Nicholas group in Harlem, New York City. I’ve worked at a nursing home in upper Manhattan for over 23 years as a certified nursing assistant and neighborhood coordinator. At my job, I see firsthand what alcoholism can do to a person. I also know what it can still do to me if I were to relapse.

A while back, a man came to my unit. We will call him William. He was admitted with end-stage cirrhosis of the liver. He glowed bright yellow from jaundice, which made the rest of the residents afraid of him, as were some of the staff.
