How I learned to love “To Wives”

He used to roll his eyes and groan. But not anymore

For the past 12 years, I have been regularly attending a Big Book group every Friday night. Our group cycles through the book about every six months. So at least twice a year I would groan (and not always internally) when the chairperson announced Chapter Eight—“To Wives”—as the evening’s reading.

I am happy to report that I have come a long way from my early days in the program, when I contemptuously viewed the entire Big Book as a somewhat quaint reflection of a much simpler time. I have, however, stubbornly held on to that opinion about Chapter Eight. I wanted that chapter rewritten, brought up to a more “modern” standard.
