The home inside us

How two Ricks on very different paths found peace and friendship on the same road

Witnessing a sober AA friend dying from health issues caused by alcoholism has had a profound effect on me.

My friend’s name was Rick, same as me. I met him when both of us were still drinking. At the time, I was attending a church where I was involved in social justice work. One of our projects was to join with several other downtown churches that took turns opening their doors to homeless people at night during cold weather. Rick was one of the homeless men who slept on the floor of the basement community room. I was a volunteer who helped make sure there were no problems during the night.
