French Patterns Shift

PARIS--In France, where there is a café or bar for every 250 persons, one of every four men and one of every 12 women suffers from alcoholism, a study said. The results of a poll taken by reporters of the newspaper Le Monde said that alcoholism kills 30,000 people a year in France. Only heart disease and cancer kill more.

Seventy percent of the alcoholics in France are wine drinkers, most of whom drink at least four or five quarts a day, Le Monde said.
