Close call at 10,000 feet

High above the Grand Canyon, a newcomer was overcome with the obsession. Luckily, he had friends in Phoenix

At 18 months sober, I thought I knew everything I needed to know about sobriety. I had taken the Steps, but I trusted God only so far, my sponsor even less. My life was, at the time, a tumultuous storm. I still courted chaos. It was all I knew how to do.

I had flown south to visit my aunt in Salt Lake City. Still thinking I could control my alcoholism, I happened to purchase a copy of a book that I knew to be about an alcoholic romp through the southwestern United States. I thought it would be a fun adventure down memory lane. I read the first half of the book at my aunt’s place and then took it on the plane with me to finish on my return home.
