Birthday prayer

At two years sober, I no longer know what to wish for when I blow out my birthday candles.

During the 10 years before I found AA, my birthday wish was always the same. I would sit down at the table and suffer through the strains of “Happy Birthday,” desperately wishing everyone would go away so I could stop pretending to be a social drinker and settle in for a night of blackout oblivion drinking. Then, as the moment to blow out the candles arrived, I would close my eyes, take a deep breath, and wish: Just keep my children safe.
