Here for each other

The long, beautiful friendship of two women who met at the New York City St. Luke’s AA meeting in 1959

My friend Frances was at the first meeting I attended, back in 1959 at St. Luke’s on Hudson Street in New York City. Frances was an imposing woman, nearly six feet tall in heels, dark haired and with a hearty laugh. I didn’t see her there at first because I was hunkered down in my own fear that I might not be welcome. I was only 26 and had suffered no tremendous losses like the ones I heard about that first night.

But I noticed Frances regularly at meetings. She was one of the grown-ups, with two and a half years of sobriety, and I was just learning to be sober.
