More Women Alcoholics

Although an increasing number of women drink alcohol, a traditional double standard toward male and female drunkenness is still strong, Edith S. Gomberg, professor of social work at the University of Michigan, said. Mrs. Gomberg, a clinical psychologist, said most persons view male drunkenness with pity or amusement, but view the same behavior in women as disgusting.

While studies show that more women drink today, the number varies with age and income. Most women who drink socially are between ages 20 and 40, but most women with a drinking problem are in the mid to late 40's.
