New Church Approach

A proposal to treat alcoholic Catholics by anointing their hands and foreheads with holy oils--a sacramental act often called "the last rites" and traditionally reserved for the dying--will shortly come under study by priests and bishops in this country.

Noting that alcoholism is a sickness and is frequently "a sickness unto death," the Rev. Francis Brown, spokesman for the National Federation of Priests' Councils, disclosed that the organization has voted to have priests and bishops in most of the country's 154 dioceses explore the idea of anointing compulsive drinkers.
