How I tell my story

A former prisoner writes about honesty, acceptance and the careful way he shares about his past

We’ve all been told from the beginning, once we were able to hear what is read and said at AA meetings, that no one in recovery would judge us for what we did while in our active alcoholism, as long as we were serious about sobriety. It isn’t one of the Promises, but it’s clearly there in the spirit of the program.

Even so, I wasn’t surprised when my first sponsor responded to part of my Fifth Step with an immediate, “Don’t ever tell anybody in AA that you did that.”
