In the warm sunlight

Sitting at her aunt’s table, she was content just doing what was in front of her

It was a crisp autumn day in October. The sun was bright and warm and the air had a pleasant coolness to it. I love October. I love the changing colors of the leaves, the angle of the sun and the sharpness in how everything looks and feels.

I’ll never forget a similar day a few years ago. I was sitting at my aunt’s dining room table, with the late afternoon sun making the room glow. We had just returned home from a doctor’s appointment. She’d had open-heart surgery two months before and we went in for a follow-up visit with the doctor.
