Suicide Motives

YELLOWKNIFE, N.W.T.--Alcohol is associated with about half the suicides in both whites and Eskimos in the north, and the suicide rate for both groups is about the same, Dr. A. Patrick Abbott said. He is director of mental health for the federal health department's northern region.

Indians, however, have a low suicide rate. In the Northwest Territories, there has been only one recorded Indian suicide in the last 15 years.
