Better than Kentucky bourbon

With a gut feel and a few wild guesses, some hardworking AAs start a national corrections conference

For the past year and a half it’s been my privilege to serve on the committee that organized and presented the first annual National Corrections Conference in St. Louis. The fruits of our labor bloomed with the presence of 387 attendees from 33 different states, 4 Canadian provinces and Puerto Rico. Never in our wildest dreams did we expect a turnout like that.

We started from scratch way back in the summer of 2016. Our chairperson opened a bank account with $300 of his own money. He put together a committee to work on organizing what was then just an idea. We found a venue and held monthly conference calls with the corrections desk at GSO. In retrospect, I can see the spirit of the ideal democracy of AA in action throughout our efforts. Many times it was awkward. There were disputes and disagreements. But cool heads prevailed. Everyone’s voice was heard and God as he expressed himself in our group conscience led us onward.
