Alcoholism is a sickness, the IRS recognizes. Previously, it has allowed medical deductions for treatment costs and for transportation outlays in attending meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous. Now, going a step further, the IRS rules that wage payments to someone absent from work while undergoing treatment are excludable from taxes as sick pay. The ruling concerned an armed forces member who entered an alcoholic rehabilitation center and continued to draw his pay while there. . . .
