No two alike

A member in California makes peace with the holidays one snowflake at a time

The holidays have always been difficult for me. When I was a child, I thought Thanksgiving and Christmas were supposed to be the way they looked on TV. I imagined our family sitting around a fireplace, cozy and happy.

Reality was dramatically different and the fact that we didn’t have a fireplace was the least of our problems. My parents tried to make the holidays special but poverty, alcohol and their troubled relationship put a dark cloud over our lives. There was a lot of drinking and fighting, especially during the holidays. Eventually, my parents divorced. I felt incredibly lonely, particularly during the December holidays. I ached for our family to be whole and together.
