There’s nothing like a good alkathon to keep him sane, sober and useful during the holidays

As I sit here in my warm, well-adjusted home three stories above a West End suburb, it’s hard not to feel a sense of gratitude. Just a year ago, the holiday season bore a strong resemblance to my first sober Christmas, 22 years earlier. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was about to encounter an even deeper despair than I had experienced back then.

For my first Christmas in sobriety, I had just been served a court order from my soon-to-be ex-wife limiting my time with my three small children. With less than nine months of sobriety, I was barely hanging on by my tight-fisted white knuckles.
