Dangerous treats

It was Christmas time, 1988. I was stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, with four years of sobriety. Our office manager arrived at work that morning in an exceptionally good mood. He went around the office offering everyone chocolate candy. When he came by and offered some to me, I graciously accepted and took a piece. Than he looked at me and said, “Oh, go ahead, Sarge. Take two pieces, it’s Christmas time.” So I did and thanked him for his generosity.

I bit into the candy and to my surprise and shock, the candy was filled with brandy. I immediately went to the restroom to spit it out. The whole way I thought, If I swallowed it, no one would know. My next thought was … But I will know. So I washed the taste away with water.
