How a construction worker led him to his new best friend, someone who’d never let him down

It was in 1987 that I got my introduction to AA. My drinking buddy dragged me along because his wife had sent him. My wife was pleased to see me go, so I quickly agreed to do the suggested 30 meetings in 30 days.

As I sat there in the meetings, I was uncomfortable with looking at the Twelve Steps shade. There was that “God” word. So after my 30 days, I proudly proclaimed I was done with AA. I did not need a God to help me stay sober, I could do it on my own, any time. That was the longest stretch of sobriety I was to see for the next 10 years.
