Gotta shop around

After finally getting through the front door, a newcomer learns that not all meetings are alike

I remember how she looked across the room at me with those big, brown, compassionate therapist eyes and said, “OK, so your father’s an alcoholic, your mother’s an alcoholic, your brother’s alcoholic—and you have to drink wine and smoke weed till you blackout every night just to get to sleep—but you’re not an alcoholic.”

Even I had to laugh. It wasn’t exactly like a switch clicked on at that moment, but the rheostat of my denial definitely did a little recalibrating.
